Areas of Expertise

Children Act:
Juliet specialises in all areas of family law involving children, with a particular interest in domestic violence and the impact on children and families. Her practice incorporates both private and public law Children Act matters where she is regularly instructed by Local Authorities, Guardians and family members.

Since specialising in family law, Juliet has built a reputation for expertly managing both vulnerable and demanding clients, being particularly skilful in presenting often unattractive cases to the Court in a clear, sensitive and concise manner. She also has a reputation for being a fair but firm negotiator.

Juliet has developed a particular expertise in domestic violence cases and those which involve sensitive and painful issues for the lay client, having the skill to explain matters in a sensitive and compassionate manner, whilst retaining firm boundaries and ensuring the full understanding and comprehension of her clients.

Ancillary relief:

Juliet has extensive knowledge and experience of financial matters on breakdown of relationships whether marriage, cohabitation or civil partnerships. She also undertakes applications under Schedule 1 Children Act 1989 and under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996.

General

Prior to being called to the Bar, Juliet worked as a radio journalist with the BBC alongside raising her family. She also had extensive experience of voluntary work within charitable organisations, particularly learning disabled adults and those with mental health difficulties.

Juliet has been a member of Southernhay Chambers since 2002 after completing her pupillage and early years in a general set where she accepted work under general civil and criminal law. She brought those Court skills to her specialism in family law where she continues to develop them.

Juliet lives in Devon with her husband. They enjoy extensive boating, and cruise the south west coast, Channel Islands and French coast as frequently as time permits. They have three adult children, two of whom live locally and one in Edinburgh.

In 2006 Juliet helped organise a charity ball in aid of The Little House Contact Centre (along with Lauren Pitchford and Sarah Evans, and with the support of Mr. Justice Coleridge) which raised almost £20,000 at a time when the Contact Centre was in financial crisis.

She and Jacqueline Ahmed have regularly conducted the annual seminar on domestic violence for the Devon & Exeter Law Society.

Juliet is a member of the Family Law Bar Association and accepts publicly funded work in all her areas of specialisation.
