Areas of Expertise

Christopher practises in all areas of family law including public and private law children cases, ancillary relief and financial provision together with some related civil litigation.

He also gives seminars on a range of topics as part of the Southernhay Chambers seminar programme. His recent seminars include the Adoption and Children Act 2002, ancillary relief pension sharing, and regular ancillary relief up-dates.

Children - all aspects of public and private law cases relating to children. In care cases he regularly acts for Local Authorities, parents and other relatives and guardians. He has acted in a number of cases involving serious injuries with contested medical evidence.

In private law proceedings recent cases have included contact matters with serious allegations of physical and sexual abuse, and applications to remove children from the jurisdiction (including the recent Court of Appeal case Re: N [2006] EWCA Civ 357).

Ancillary relief - Christopher has extensive experience in ancillary relief - both in an advisory capacity and at Court. He has a particular interest in applications to set aside consent orders, having appeared in the Court of Appeal case of HEARD v HEARD [1995] 1 FLR 970. He also acts in applipations for financial provision for children under Schedule 1 Children Act 1989.

Related civil litigation - Christopher regularly undertakes work under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996. Together with other members of Southernhay Chambers, he delivers seminars on this topic.

He also undertakes a variety of other civil work related to his family practice including, in particular, professional negligence claims arising out of ancillary relief applications.

General

Christopher has been a member of Southernhay Chambers since 1981 and was appointed Joint Head of Chambers in 2005.

He has trained as a family mediator.
He accepts all types of Publicly Funded work, and is a member of the Family Law Bar Association

In 2001 he became a Deputy District Judge.

Christopher lives in Exeter with his wife and family. His outside interests centre on his family with whom he enjoys exploring Dartmoor, and church life.
